Now we are waiting to take a look at the Nokia CoolZone software and see if it might help out. If it has some stuff that will be useful in sending files via Bluetooth we will probably implement that rather than use another SDK. This way we know the code should be clean as it was written by nokia, and its something they are already familiar with. We would be combining the rfid technology and hopfully, assuming CoolZone can do it, having the rfid scan trigger a Bluetooth file transfer using the CoolZone software thats already developed, maybe with slight modifications.

If that does not work out, we'll look to Franson's Bluetools 1.1 that should be released in the next week or so. This new SDK version will contain a component that will allow file transfer. Then we'll have to write the code necessary to find a Bluetooth device, the service that allows file transfer on the device, and then the code to push the file.

We'll see how it goes, but I'm hoping CoolZone has the file transfer stuff done pretty well, so that we may focus on the rfid and combining the technologies so that the rfid can trigger the Bluetooth file transfer (easier said that done I guess!).

#2 "Picture This" - An RFID & WIFI Digital Picture Frame
-----------------------------------------------
For this project we will create a Digital Picture Frame that has WIFI and RFID technologies built-in. However, the catch is, it will do more than pictures.

What we will create is a very pretty looking picture frame that encloses a nice 15" LCD screen. You've seen these before right?!?! Well not like this, because this one doesn't just show pictures... Why not??? Because this one isnt just an LCD screen, it's a laptop computer running Windows XP, minus its casing and a few other parts here and there (to compact its size as much as possible). So your more or less looking at taking apart a laptop to get at the lcd, motherboard, ect. that type of thing, without the baggage of the cd-rom, floppy drive, ect. Still dont get it? Take a look at this...

Now you get it right!?!? So imagine something similar to that, with also having wifi and rfid technology. With the rfid you can walk up scan a card and an application running on the picture frame (on windows) uses the wifi to go get pictures from a network folder, or off a flikr account. Then someone else walks up and its goes and gets their pictures.

Whats so different from a usual digital picture frame? Well lets say another person walks up with a new RFID tag. The readers reads there tag as they approach the frame and it finds they are someone interested in cool new cell phones from nokia. The "picture" frame then loads up a full screen video segment of all the newest nokia cell phones. Maybe some spanish speaking person walks up to the frame, it reads their tag, knows this person speaks spanish and plays the latest news to them in spanish.

Think of all the cool stuff you can do with rfid & wifi, in such a visually appealing package (ill post some more cool ideas later).

Next

So these are some ideas we've come up with about projects we might tackle this semester.

Nokia Bluetooth Fairy
------------------------------------------
Check out the proposal for the current and proposed Nokia Bluetooth Fairy Here.

We're currently waiting to look into possibly using a new technology out from Nokia called CoolZone. It does simlilar tasks as the bluetooth fairy using bluetooth.

Language Room
-----------------------------------------
The Language Room is somewhere students would come to suppliment learning a new language. When the students came to the room they would be giving a personalized RFID tag, possibly if they use the room often they get one they keep all semester. This tag is referenced in a database with two language, a native language and a learning language. For example, if the person speaks english and is learning spanish, the tag is referenced for Spanish to English.

This language room will be filled with all types of object used in everyday life, the types of words you might learn when learning a language. Examples might include, Pencils, Books, Cups, A mini car, a computer, ect. Each of these item would have an RFID tag attached to it. When a student walked up to an item, lets say a pencil, he or she would scan their personal tag first and then scan the pencil's RFID tag, on a near by reader. The reader, hooked to a kiosk, would then speak the word for pencil in spanish, and then repeat it in english. This allows the students to get their hands on an object, try to think of its "word" in another language and then have it repeated to them in both the language they are learning and their native language.

Wouldn't it be cool if you had a cell phone with an RFID reader built in, and you scanned the object and it would repeat the word for the object in the two languages? This would require a cellphone with RFID reader, and an application running on the phone that had a setting for the two languages. Might be cool.

Personilzed Digital Picture Frame
---------------------------------------------------
Wouldn't it be cool if somewhere there sat one of the brand new, very nice, very expensive, 17" digital pictures frames that many people could share? Wouldn't it be even cooler than everytime someone looked at their persoal photos on this digital frame they saw the latest pictures theyve taken or pictures taken by friends and family.

Well with a PDP (Personalized Digital Pictures?) :-) this is possible. The newest digital frames actually have wifi built into their setup, allowing for downloading of new pictures. So when someone updates a specific photo alblum online it will recieve the newest pictures. So thats 1 part of the system.

The PDP also allows for multiple users. How does it do this? Well RFID of course... Each user of this PDP would have their own personal RFID tage that identifies them to the system. Each time they sit down at the digitial picture frame or PDP the system recongizes them by their RFID tag. There would be a small scanner near the PDP that would be hooked to a computer, possibly in another area. When the RFID tag is recongized the computer tells the PDP which set of pictures to load, which album. This allows each user to get his or her own photos from friends or family without having to touch a button or know anything about a computer or getting photos online.

This system could also be done with a normal computer, LCD screen, and a slideshow.

Thats its for now....

Bluetooth & RFID Project Proposal Final

Heres the final Proposal:

Final Proposal

nmi.uga.edu/students/mgriffin/mmscholar/bluetooth/bluetoothrfid.doc

DONE

Finishing

Just trying to finish up the database stuff for the application. So I've got where I can manually reference an RFID tag with any bluetooth device. When you scan that RFID tag the app makes a connection to the device referenced to that tag and pushes it a file. Hopefully next week I can implement a database so the program can read the tag and devices from a database of stored pairings rather than just the application having a finite number of pairings. This all assuming I can figure it out, cause I only gots 3 days when I get back!!!!

Proposal is 95% done tho. If we want to show the whole update the content process I might need a little help figureing out how to do so because I might not have time to do that part. Yeah.... So just working on the bluetooth stuff some more. I've decided im not cool enough to figure out how to program an interface that would allow a person to add their device without someone being at the computer, or without them having to touch or click something. I believe it would require me to program some active x interface that I donno how to do.

I've moved on to the next problems. First, I did figure out how to get the file push event to iniciate if you scan the same tag twice in a row. So now if someone were to scan their tag, cancel the send or want to send the file again, they could scan that same tag once again (without scanning an intermediate one) and get the file pushed to their phone again.

I've also started working with some database stuff in vb.net. I plan on trying to add a database to the program that will hold everyone's phone name (Bluetooth Device Name) along with a specific RFID tag for that device. When someone scans that tag it will push the file to their device.

We'll see if im cool enough to figure that one out....

Project Update

Well It's nice to look at some words on a screen that arn't in vb.net. I've been workin' almost everyday on this bluetooth and rfid stuff, its super fun ::cough::. But, really I've actully made some progress, not a ton but some. So here's a short update of what I can do, what I need to be able to do (including what I dont think ill figure out), and what I would like some help with....

What I can now do
-----------------
* Manually add any bluetooth device to my application (with or without a passkey, however some phones don't like not having one)

* Manually connect and push any file to a phone

* Scan an RFID tag, automaticlly connect to the selected device in the program, and push it any file. This file can be choosen at the time of the push or pre selected before I compile.

What I need to know how to do
----------------------------
* Scan the same RFID tag twice in a row and make it re-call the push file event (sadly its quite a bit more difficult than it seems to do this, ill get it figured out tho, I THINK)

* Reference a tag to a specific device
-I might figure this out, maybe, dependant upon what i focus on

* Adding a device to the application with out physically sitting at the computer.
- Ok, this is the one I do not know if I will be able to figure out. Given my time frame this may be above and beyond me. To add someone to the application Im using ActiveX controls. So just as someone would add a device to windows you would add a device to this application. Well if you've ever done that before you click add new, click next, select the device, select what kinda pass key if any, and you're done. Well I have no clue whatso ever how to automate all that. The best thing I could think now is to have a kiosk and have them do the process themself, but thats not really any good. So im struggling with that whole thing. However, once that device is in the application 1 time (JUST ONCE) Then I may push them files very easily with them only having to accept 1 message.

What I need help with
----------------------
* How do I do this whole adding a new device thing? I know no one else knows how to program that, or if it can be done without writting some activex controls, but is there a good way to add the device when they pick up the rfid tag? Or something!?!? I donno I quit...

* I've got the whole idea behind creating the video everyday, encoding it, and stuff, but what is the best way to update the file on the laptop on the wag zone? Share the directory the file is in and just upload to it or?

If anyone has any ideas that would put me well on my way to getting some type of presentable project for nov 30, otherwise im struggling with all these things needed for this project to be done.... Just not enough time capitan, too much code!!!!

and im out...

Bluetooth Bluetooth Bluetooth

Well I've been staring at some code for the past week now. Last week I did some more research and found myself a new SDK. This SDK was written by a german software company called HPH. The SDK is written for VB and unlike the few other bluetooth SDK's I've found this one focuses mainly on file transfer. It makes it much easier to understand the sending and recieveing of files over bluetooth, and also makes it much easier to do so. Sadly its not click a button, run a line of code, send a file kinda thing, but its much easier than me trying to do it at the byte level, they were nice enough to do that for me :-) !!! The SDK uses ActiveX controls, so it actully uses the windows bluetooth dialog to setup new devices ect.

I've spend the last few days reading code provide in an example application that was sent along with the SDK. I understand a good portion of the code and have begun to change it to fit my application. The big trouble right now is getting devices to connect. Some stuff work without pass keys, some prefer it, some like the device to be paired in the phone ect. So im trying to figure out the best way to connect the devices to the computer... Right now I really have no clue, there are too many variables. My hopes will be that there is some easy way that a person can pair their device with the computer when they pick up their rfid tag. The problem lies in doing so without someone having to be sitting at the computer (if i cannot automate it, can I make use of a nice touch screen kiosk?). Im really not sure if that can be done or not... However once the devices are on the bluetooth device list on the computer I will without a doubt be able to push them any file I choose with them only having to click yes on one accept file message.

Bluetooth & RFID Proposal - A Working Document

So for the past week, almost everyday, I've been working to get this proposal to an current acceptable form. I updated a number of things in the proposal including:

-Added the development side to the demonstartion area
-Updated the timeline to show exact dates
-Added a what I need to know (what I know, what I dont know) section

I've also started on a few other sections that I will finish at a later time. Once I finish the last few sections the proposal will be quite extensive and cover everything about how the Bluetooth & RFID system will work inside and out, and how to impletment it.

I have completed the Network topology diagram, the user flowchart, as well as the content creator flowchart. Here's a look at them, click the images for a full size image.

As far as the bluetooth goes, I really haven't had as much time as I would like with it. I've been spending 99% of my time trying to get the proposal nice and pretty. Hopefully this week I can finish it up so I can work on the stuff I really need to be working on, because I have a long way to go. It would help if I could find some people online that had done this before, but no one really has.... Guess ILL FIGURE IT OUT HUH!?!?!

Here is the updated Bluetooth & RFID proposal: 2nd Draft Proposal

Bluetooth Update, ASP Update, and stuff

This week I've been working with getting my proposal ready for the BlueTooth Fairy, as well as started work on the toplogy diagram for nokia. I've also put up a few links to some interesting news I've found online relivate to some of the projects.

As far as the bluetooth goes... it goes... The company Franson that devloped the SDK I used for the GPS finally released their bluetooth sdk for VB.net and C#. I've been working with that and an example that came with the sdk. Ive got it to run and find all of the bluetooth devices within range of the computer. Then using the program I can connect to the device and see all the bluetooth services it offers. Most phones offer a service called obex object push, which will allow me to push it the audio or video file. So my next task will be finding out how to use this specific service to connect to the phone and push it a file. One of the other tough parts right now is it's a little rough sometimes when the phones are not previously paired with the computer, but I'll figure it out.

Also I've updated the asp pages a little bit more to work with just the RFID stuff. I may not use this directly with my project, I might I dont really know yet, but its running a bit better. Ill just need to add a few more areas as well as get it on the nmi server, which currently doesnt run asp.net only asp.

~Peace

News News

Ipod Audio ASP

The past week I've been working with the RFID stuff as well as some asp stuff that works in the background.

RFID Program
----------------
I've updated the RFID Program to work a little better and run a little more smoothly. It now has a place to choose a url, so you dont have to re-type the address every time. It also hides some of the advanced features until choosen on the menu. It also obviously now includes a menu.

ASP
---------------
Using ASP.Net I reworked the first part of the asp pages used to interface the rfid tags with the database. The webpage pulls in the rfid tag from the program and displays it in a text box at the top. That tag number is also displayed in a few other text boxes used to reference that tag number with a url, phone number, search, and more. It's also a lot prettier :-)

After searching for hours I've found a few different sites that have SDK's that allow ASP code to SMS as well as do a WAP push. However, as for right now the only ones I have found do this by sending the information through their servers and charge you per message.

More stuff soon...

Subway Maps on PSP

Heres a take off of Mikes Ides:

http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000980061404/

Shamp Questions

Can an active link in a service message point directly to an MP3 file
(like we can with a 3GP file) and make it play automatically?
-- At this point the only way we know how to make the link work is for someone to open the message and click the link, at which time the file will be downloaded to a temp directory and played from there.

Are the 3GP files we are accessing streaming? The Nokia 6620's read it fine and it includes a jpg picture as well as a link to a 3gp file which is about 1.6meg. It downloads and plays in real player.

http://www.nmi.uga.edu/students/mgriffin/mmscholar/cell/cellhtml.html

If you go to the link below with your cell phone it will take you to a page written in WML. Its very simliar to the first only without the picture and again its in WML instead of HTML. It also contains the link that plays the 3gp file.

http://www.nmi.uga.edu/students/mgriffin/mmscholar/cell/videowml.wml

Last, this is a link that will stream the 3gp file to your phone via a quicktime server. The server here at nmi isnt properly setup to do this yet, but we're hoping to get it setup soon and this link will work properly. (Note: It works if you connected via hardwire, not through wag yet (port blocked), or the cell phone)...

rtsp://qt.nmi.uga.edu/mgriffin/nats.3gp

~Matti

PSP

With PSP coming with built in wifi one of the first things people wanted to do with them was browse the web. Well Sony decided not to include a browser for the first few versions of the psp firmware. However, a few people found an interesting way around that little problem.
Wipeout, one of the first games to come out for the PSP, has a menu selection for downloading additional content released by the game developer as it became avaliable. Such as new weapons, ships, and even levels. Well the way the designers made this content avaliable to Wipeout owners was through a very small web browser they built into the game.
When users click to download they are giving the selection of which wireless network they wish to use and it hops on and goes straight to a predefined Wipeout download page. Well it turns out that if you get Wipeout to run this browser (clicking download) and then you trick it you can get to another special page online.

What happens is you tell Wipeout to use a wireless network youve setup that contains a certain DNS server instead of the one that would be assigned to the psp by the DHCP server once the psp got its IP address. Well when the psp hits the web it goes to that DNS server which happens to be a portal address. This portal is a site someone sets up that has links and an address bar to type in.
One of the best portals is 67.171.70.72. Just set that as the primary DNS for a WiFi connection and use that connection to connect with Wipeout. Also its not too hard to setup a portal if you have your own websever. So for instance we could have a static ip setup for nmi and when someone used it as their DNS when they connected it would take them directly to NMI's homepage or to a WAG webpage.

With everyone pushing Sony for a browser they decided to include one with the newest version of their firmware, 2.0. This browser is added to the menu of the psp and connects like any other wifi connection on the psp. Start the browser and choose any WiFi network avaiable with a internet connection and your on.
The browser works pretty well. Moving around it isnt too bad with the joystick being a mouse and the d pad moving through the links on the page. Scrolling is quite easy as well by just holding the square key and moving the joystick. The biggest set back is entering web addresses. With no keyboard, its simliar to doing the same on a cell phone, AKA "THIS CRAP TAKES FOREVER".

----------------
IDEA:

Setup a webpage formatted for the psp 480 x 272, that contains many helpful links to pages. Set it up where its very easy to navigate using psp controls. You might make it where there are a few major links on the home page (ebay, google, yahoo, gmail) and then have a small list of other catagories that would have more links. Make the domain something easy to get to IE www.shortpsp.com or www.type4me.com or www.linkpsp.com.

----------------

Here are some more interesting things going on with the psp!!!
--------------------------------------------------

Sony Announces TALKMAN

Sony Computer Entertainment of Japan (SCEJ) has announced the TALKMAN for the PSP. The TALKMAN will become the first speech recognition device for the PSP.

The TALKMAN will connect a microphone to the USB port of the PSP. TALKMAN will be bundled with special software (and most likely a 2.0 update) to allow for four languages to be spoken and translated. Languages are to include Japanese, Chinese, English and Korean and will be translated via speech recognition. The pronunciation of the languages can also be checked and there will be a game mode for single person, perhaps to learn a new language. More info will be known at the Tokyo Game Show this weekend lasting from the 16th to the 18th this September.

TALKMAN is expected to be for sale this November 17th, unknown if it will be a world release at the same time. The price will be 5,800 Yen (about $53US), and will include the USB microphone.

The USB microphone (PSP-240) is a monaural condenser microphone which will weigh approximately 6 grams and measures 50x10x10mm (width x height x depth)

-------------------------------------------------

PSP Web Browser Emulator

One of our users, Ashley Bennett, has created a web design tool for those designing content for the PSP. It is a basic PSP Web Browser Emulator, which is really just a correctly proportioned frame on a nice image. This will allow you to quickly see what your site would look like on a PSP. Once you have the devices setup to send and recieve files you're pretty much just pushing the send button. Once you have the file ready and make sure bluetooth is on for each device, and atleast the host is set to be discoverable, you can send the files via bluetooh from up to about 33 feet.

Sending Video & Audio to Computers via Bluetooh

-Video
-- Just used the cellphone's camera to make a short video clip (10 seconds with the 6620's)
-- These files are saved in 3gp format
-- Turn on your bluetooth, select the video file and select send via bluetooth
-- Find the device your sending it to and click send
-- Once its on the computer any application that plays 3gp files will open it no problem.

-Audio
-- Pretty much the same process only with audio
-- Record some audio with the built in audio recorder and the cell phones built in mic
-- Find the file and send it over to the computer
-- It will be in aiff format from the 6620

Sending Video & Audio to Cellphone via Bluetooth

-Video
-- Use sometype of program to create a video file
-- I used Imovie because it was on the computer, and used my Isight to record a short video clip
-- Edit the video clip (added sound, cropped, ect)
-- Once you have your video clip youll need to get it into a format the cellphone will play
-- Most new cell phones these days will play video, even if they dont capture it
-- Most all of these phones will play 3gp files which are a form of mpeg4 files, so in turn most will play mpeg4 as well
-- You'll need a application that will convert the file from whatever format it is currently in (.mov from Imovie) to 3gp
-- There's tons of these online but we'll use Quicktime pro
-- Open up quicktime, choose export and then 3gp, pretty simple
-- With your 3gp movie, make sure bluetooth is turned on for both devices, and the host it discoverable if needed
-- Bluetooth it over and play using the phones built in media player for 3gp files

-Audio
-- Again the same as before
-- Record audio with some application and microphone
-- Convert to a format the phone will play (IE. mp3)
-- Bluetooth it over

So thats how you go about bluetoothing files back and forth from and to a cellphone.....

~Matti

Pushing CellPhone video (3gp) to a Blog

Well looking around for some information about pushing video taken on a cell phone directly to a blog was interesting. No one is really doing that much yet, as far as major names go. When I tired to push video to blogger, just as I did with the picture and text I uploaded and posted to my blog from my cell phone, it gave me an error that said blogger does not support uploading of 3gp files or movie files. So blogger.com is out for now...

As I looked around more I found lots of people that vlog or video blog, but most do dont it on a cell phone and push it to there blog while on the go. However I found one blog where I guy was doing this. After looking through his whole blog I think he teaches mobile media at NYU and his entire blog was resonably interesting.

Well he goes about explaning how he does it and here are the main ideas:

1st you'll need a cell phone that will capture video, and do MMS to an email account. (IE. our nokia 6620's)

Next you'll have to setup a dedicated email account to send this mms messages to on your server. Also on that server you must have some type of weblog publishing platform, he suggests Movable Type (http://www.sixapart.com/movabletype/).

After that you must setup the server to run a perl script (which he wrote). It's pretty complicated I don't know perl's sytax all that well, but the format is simlar to C++ and I can understand about half of what he's doing. It is still a bit over my head for sure though. Once your using the perl script you use Unix's Cron Utility to run the script every minute or so. Cron is a program that runs a text file of commands and has a scheduler to tell it when to run a given set of commands (might also be helpful pushing bluetooth files to a cellphone). The script pulls the subject of the MMS as the blog post title and the message as the post's body.

Lastly, he uses a modified version of MT- Enclosures which automatically creates an updated RSS feed for the new blog post with pointers to the 3gp video that was pushed from the cellphone. I do not think you must do this step to get the video to the blog only to have it be updated by a video aggregator.

Heres his blog: http://www.walking-productions.com/slop/

The one other site I've found that might be promising in this area is http://mms2web.com. This site says it's compatible with MMS Video but I have no way to test it as of right now. However this is their process for getting the MMS content to a webpage (its a little easier than the other, if it works):

1st setup a dedicated email on your mail server that forwards that MMS message to their servers.

2nd their servers converts the MMS message and then sends it to your web server.

Lastly your web server recieves the data from their servers and displays it using PHP or ASP script, provided by mms2web.com (which are a little less complex than the perl script above).

My Thoughts:
It's not easy yet, but its comin!

~Matti

Athens Downtown PodGuide

In New Media we've created a PodGuide for Downtown Athens. Here's a short overview of what I did:

1) Recorded the audio for the podcast.
A) Kept an orginial .wav copy
B) Coverted one to a .mp3 file

2) Built a XML file for the regular podcast and linked it to the .mp3 file which I uploaded.

3) For the Enhanced podcast I used PodCast AV and set chapter points, links, and pictures for each section of the podcast.
A) Then I used PodCast AV to compile everthing together in one file that the Ipod photo reconizes.

Subscribe to the regular podcast here: feed://www.nmi.uga.edu/students/mgriffin/mmscholar/podcast/podcastwavehouse.xml
Subscribe to the enhanced podcast here: feed://www.nmi.uga.edu/students/mgriffin/mmscholar/podcast/epodcastwavehouse.xml

Heres some other interesting and helpful links for the enhanced podcast:

http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive/2005/07/how_to_make_enh.html
http://www.voxmedia.org/wiki/PodcastChapterTool

Peace

Mobile Media Scholars - Intro Post

Well this is the first post of many for my Mobile Media Scholars blog. Ok well we will start off with the non-dorky stuff I use to play off the computer dork side in me.

So I'm the president of the UGA Breakdance Team here at UGA. I've been breakdancing for about 3 years now and have been teaching a class here in Athens at a local dance studio for the past year. While with the UGA Breakdance Team I've performed at a number of different events including local UGA events here on campus, which draw anywhere from a few hundred to over 11,000 people at the sold out UGA Basketball halftime shows we do almost every year. We've also performed in front of a sold out Gwinnett Arena (12,000+) for the halftime of a Gwinnett Gladiators hockey game.

I also do a new extreme sport called flowboarding. It's a sport where a machine pumps thousands of gallons of water anywhere from 20mph to over 50mph over a special surface to create a wave. I've been riding for about 9 years now and competing for about 4. I've won a few events here and there includes the national title 2 years in a row and currently hold the 2nd spot in 2 different divisions or disciplines. Http://www.waveloch.com, check it out...

Ok ok to the dork stuff...

I'm a senior MIS major here at UGA with a 4.0 in my MIS classes. I'm also a NMI certificate student as well a NMI Mobile Media Scholar. One of my favorite project for mobile media was the project in which I programed an application for the cell phone that allowed users to access their ebay account on their phone. It even used a real working mouse cursor controled by the joystick on the phone. I plan on going to get my masters degree shortly after graduation in some type of Internet technology and or mobile media technology field. I currently have my A+ certification from CompTIA, and am planning to take my Inet+ certification soon. I’m also looking at taking a short amount of time, in the near future, to prepare and take the CompTIA Security+ and Network+ certifications.

I'm interested in any type of up and coming technologies. Especially things that deal with mobile devices such as cell phones, mp3 players, PVP's, and other types of devices along those lines. Coming up with new and innovative uses for these items as well as helping to build content for these new applications, is something I’m also very interested in. I'm fairly confident with most new technologies and everything from web design, web programming, software programming, audio / video / image editing, and most things that deal with Internet technology such as VoIP. I also have a good back ground in basic electronics and electrical components. I think one of my strengths is my versatility in the technology field, however there's always someone better at each part and something I can learn...

That is Me!

~Matti
